Propane Leak Caused Fatal House Explosion in Marshall, MN
A propane leak caused by a damaged supply line was the source of a house explosion in Marshall, MN that killed Gail and Nancy Schipansky, an investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office has determined. A spark from the dryer ignited a buildup of gas in the basement of the home. The leak was likely caused when a crew installing a septic tank struck the supply line one week before the explosion, according to investigators.
The Schipansky property was located in the 2800 block of Highway 19, about two miles east of Marshall. The explosion occurred around 6:30 a.m. on August 27 killing Gail Schipansky, 74. Nancy Schipansky, 71, suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she died September 2.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene that morning, nothing was on fire and nothing but a pile of rubble remained of the home. Area residents who were miles away from the Schipansky house told local media that they heard the sound and felt the force of the blast.
