Colorado Apartment Explosion Injures 3 in Aurora [Updated]

An apartment explosion in Aurora, CO injured three people on the morning of September 10. Firefighters arrived at Parkside Collective Apartments on 14565 East Alameda Avenue after receiving calls about smokey conditions. Hundreds of residents have been displaced. Three people suffered burn injuries. Two of the burn victims have been designated as “green patients,” which means their injuries are non-life-threatening. The third burn victim was transported to the Medical Center of Aurora.
The cause of the apartment explosion is still under investigation. Photos from Aurora Fire Rescue show a huge hole on the fourth floor of the building in what looks like a mechanical room. Crews from Xcel Energy say there is no indication that the utility’s gas lines caused the explosion.
Parkside Collective, which is managed by Holland Residential, was built in 2021 and contains 216 units on four floors.

The American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter for about 300-400 residents at Gateway High School. As of Sunday, it is unclear when residents can return to retrieve their belongings. One resident told 9News that “the ground started to shake below the apartment building – at that point, we decided to make our way outside.”
Parkside Collective Residents Unable to Return Home During Explosion Investigation
Parkside Collective sent an email to residents on Wednesday that the building evaluation process will take several months. The email says that residents will need to find a new place to live and that their duty to pay rent stops on September 10 with no lease break fee.
In the notice, property management said, “The building department has not authorized access back into the building to move the contents of each unit out of the building.”
However, the City of Aurora issued a statement the following day that says, “No city department has issued orders that bar residents from entering their homes since Saturday’s incident.”
Several residents are staying in nearby hotels while they find a place to live. Neighboring businesses have also suffered due to the loss of local foot traffic. One resident told 9News, “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was negligence to be honest with you because how could a new building have that problem that fast?”
As of September 17, Aurora Police received dozens of theft reports at Parkside Collective since the explosion happened. Residents reported finding their units ransacked when they were finally allowed to enter and retrieve their belongings. After the thefts were reported, the management company told residents there would be security on site.
