Baltimore Gas Explosion – Multiple Critical Injuries, 1 Death Reported
Multiple injuries and one fatality have been reported after a gas explosion involving multiple row houses in Northwest Baltimore this morning. The explosion in the 6500 block of Reisterstown Rd trapped several people beneath the rubble. Firefighters dug through the debris by hand to rescue three people. All of them were transported to area hospitals with critical injuries.
Neighbors said they smelled gas before the explosion. Gas leaks are not unusual in Baltimore. Much of the city’s pipeline infrastructure was installed in the 1950s and the joints are failing. By 2016, as many as many two dozen leaks were being reported each day, according to data from Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) cited in a report from the Baltimore Sun.
