Cass County Explosion Leaves MN Man Seriously Injured

A man in Cass County, MN was seriously injured in a house explosion involving a propane furnace today. The injured man was the only one inside the home, located about an hour north of Brainerd in the small community of Remer. He was doing work on the furnace when it exploded. Emergency responders airlifted him to a hospital in the Twin Cities for treatment of burns and other explosion injuries.

Like natural gas, propane is highly flammable. But, while natural gas rises because it is lighter than air, propane is heavy and sinks accumulating in basements and other low-lying areas. Sometimes this accumulation can occur without the tell-tale smell of the odorant added propane that is meant to serve as a warning that there is a leak.

Factors such as age, smoking and general health can inhibit our sense of smell. Or, prolonged exposure can cause “odor fatigue.” There’s also “odor fade” a process of absorption and oxidation that causes the smell of the odorant to diminish to the point where it can’t be detected. This can happen when pipes are new or when propane tanks aren’t properly filled.
