Waukegan Silicone Plant Explosion Leaves 3 Dead, I Missing
Three people died and one is missing after an explosion at AB Specialty Silicones in Waukegan, IL on Friday, May 3rd. Waukegan, is located about 35 miles north of Chicago.
Jeff Cummings, 57, Byron H. Biehn, 53, and Allen Stevens, 29 all perished in the blast which occurred around 9:30 p.m. Six other employees were in the building. Two people did not require medical treatment. Three remain hospitalized. One person is still missing.
AB Specialty Silicones makes silicone products that are used in adhesives, sealants, medical and dental supplies, food processing and other business sectors. Waukegan Fire Marshal Steve Lenzi told Fox 32 that most of the processes the company uses to make its products are non-hazardous and they are still trying to determine the cause of the explosion.
