Explosion at Pelican Island Tank Farm Injures 2 in Texas

An explosion at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal on Pelican Island, Texas injured two people yesterday. Workers at the crude-oil storage facility on GTI Blvd. were welding near a tank that holds two million gallons of heavy crude when the tank exploded into flames. Firefighters used foam cannons to suppress the fire.

Owned by World Point Terminals, based in St. Louis, the Pelican Island Storage Terminal is located in an industrial area near the Texas A&M University at Galveston campus on the north side of the Galveston ship channel. The university issued a shelter-in-place order that was in place for several hours.

Over the last seven years, Texas A&M University at Galveston has filed 13 air quality complaints against the facility with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, according to the Galveston County Daily News. The most recent complaint was filed in September 2019.
