Michael Smith, vice chairman of the company, told WITN that the workers suffered third-degree burns when a flash explosion occurred. He said there was a significant amount of dust in the area where the work was being performed and that it may have contributed to the explosion. Smith said he was not sure if the contractor had secured proper “hot work” permits needed to use welding and cutting tools in that area.

An investigation of the explosion is underway.
