Explosion in Durham, North Carolina, Kills one, Injures at least 17
An explosion near the Kaffeinate coffee shop at 115 Duke St. in Durham, NC killed one person and injured 17 others. Workers in the area reportedly struck a gas line while excavating the street on April 4, 2019 causing a gas leak that likely led to the blast, fire officials said.
After receiving a report that someone smelled gas in the area, authorities and a crew from PSNC Energy had arrived to clear the area and warn residents when the massive explosion occurred. It flattened nearby structures and blew out windows for multiple blocks. A PSNC employee and at least one firefighter were among the injured.
PSNC has cut off gas service to the area while search and rescue efforts are underway.
