Workers near the Kaffeinate coffee shop and Prescient in the middle of the 115 Duke St. block of Durham, NC, reportedly struck a 2″ gas line while excavating the street on April 4, 2019. Authorities and utility company workers had arrived to clear the area and warn residents when a massive explosion occurred, flattening nearby structures and blowing out windows for multiple blocks. At least one of the seriously injured was a firefighter and another injured person was a Dominion Energy employee.
Dominion Energy has reportedly cut off gas to the area in order to help prevent further fires. The Durham School for the Arts is located a few blocks away, but nobody there was injured. Students were being sent home early as a precaution. Search and rescue was going to continue on-scene into the evening.
