Janesville, WI Duplex Explosion Injures 2

Two people were injured when an explosion occurred at a duplex in Janesville, WI last night.  One tenant reported smelling gas before the explosion.

A tenant told Janesville Fire Battalion Chief Ron Bomkamp that the odor had been coming from the area in the basement near the water heater for several days, according to NBC15.com. The explosion occurred after another tenant went down to the basement and lit a cigarette.

A fire following the blast had fully engulfed the house, located in the 800 block of Hawthorne Ave., by the time firefighters arrived to the scene around 9:15 p.m.

One of the victims sustained serious burns. Both are being treated at Mercy Hospital.
