Natural Gas Leak Suspected in Brookings, SD Fatal House Explosion

A natural gas leak is the suspected source of a fatal house explosion on February 20 in Brookings, SD. Firefighters were called to the scene at 618 Sixth Ave. just before noon to find a heavily involved fire and a portion of the house blown apart.

Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann told the Brookings Register that there appears to have been a mechanical malfunction of the gas line in the basement and when the gas found an ignition source there was an explosion.

Robert Fryer, 56, perished in the fire.  An investigation is underway.
