Neighbors Rescue Veteran from Memorial Day Explosion in Berlin, CT
Neighbors rescued an 83-year-old Marine Corps veteran trapped in the flaming wreckage of his Berlin, CT home after it exploded on Memorial Day. A gas leak is the suspected source of the blast that leveled the home on Christian Ave.
When the blast occurred around 11 a.m., neighbors ran to help. It took them several tries before they found a way to make it inside. After they pulled the man and his dog to safety, emergency responders transported the man to Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit.
Fire officials have not yet released an official cause for the explosion. But neighbors told local media that they smelled gas the night before the explosion. Crews from various utilities including Connecticut Natural Gas were on scene as emergency responders sought to bring the blaze under control.
