Propane Explosion at LEAP Inc. in Farmington, ME: 1 Dead, 6 Injured
A propane explosion at LEAP Inc., a nonprofit organization in Farmington, ME this morning has left one person dead and six others injured. The newly opened nonprofit center for people with cognitive disabilities had been evacuated after the smell of gas was reported. After fire crews arrived at the scene around 8:30 this morning, an explosion occurred killing one firefighter and injured six other people.
Among the injured were four firefighters and one LEAP employee, who were all taken to area trauma centers where they remain; and one employee of the ambulance company who was treated and released.
The explosion has left residents of Farmington, a small community about 70 miles north of Portland, grieving and in shock. Witnesses say the blast, which completely leveled the building, could be heard for miles around. Construction of the two-story building that served as LEAP’s headquarters was completed about two months ago.
