High-Rise Apartment Fire in Silver Spring, MD Kills 1, Injures 17

Hundreds of residents were left without a home when a deadly fire broke out at Arrive Silver Spring apartments in Montgomery County, Maryland. The three-alarm fire killed one person and injured 17 others, including three firefighters. Ten people were transported to the hospital from the scene and seven self-reported. One adult woman died from her injuries at the hospital.

Fire crews evacuated all residents from the building, many of whom were trapped in their units due to heavy smoke. One resident is credited with saving lives by pulling the building’s manual fire alarm.

Four hundred people have been displaced by the apartment fire that left 208 units uninhabitable. Residents have been temporarily placed in the Double Tree Hotel across the street from the building but have not been given a timeline for when they are able to return.

Investigators say the cause of the fire may be inconclusive due to the severity of the damage to the building. Fire officials suspect that an aerosol can on the seventh floor may be related to the fire.
