3 Injured in Explosion at T.A.C. East in East Chicago
Three people were seriously injured in an August 14 explosion at T.A.C. East, an industrial cleaning facility in East Chicago, IN. All three are being treated in the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL and are said to be in stable condition.
Fire Chief Anthony Serna told local media that crews arrived at the scene, at 2000 E. Gary Road, within three minutes of the call placed at 7:20 a.m. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation but fire officials believe the problem originated in the garage.
T.A.C. uses chemicals to clean semi tractor-trailer tanks that transport chemicals or petroleum products. The fire that followed the blast completely destroyed the building. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management had a crew at the scene and has determined that there is no ongoing environmental threat at the site.
