Worker Seriously Injured in Explosion in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

Explosion lawyer - black smoke and flames

A 20-year-old worker, Joshua Taylor, was seriously injured with third degree burns after a work explosion at a Crescent Township business in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on June 14, 2018.

The explosion occurred at Premier Pan on McGovern Boulevard around 5:45 p.m. The injured man was lying in front of the business when responders arrived, with co-workers trying to help him. The explosion caused a fire inside the building, which the workers were able to extinguish. Police say the man survived thanks to the quick action of his co-workers.

Crescent Township police chief told CBS Pittsburgh that the injured man suffered third degree burns to his arms, chest, and face when a glazing machine exploded and sprayed hot liquid on him.

Injuries From Work Explosion and Fire

Third degree burn injuries are dangerous. The burn has affected the outer layer of skin (called the epidermis), the second layer of skin (called the dermis) and damaged the fat layer under the skin and nerves. A person’s skin is their primary defense against bacterial infection, and burns damage a much larger area than a cut or puncture. This makes the victim more vulnerable to conditions like sepsis.

Recovering from these work explosion injuries can take a long time. The burns cause a great deal of pain, and they leave scars. Healing burns is a long medical process, and can be very expensive.

While the patient is in this vulnerable state, official-looking people come to visit, inviting him to sign legal documents that he does not understand. If he signs them, he could be signing away many of his legal rights to compensation for what has happened to him.

In these situations, the employer, the insurance companies, and the state assistance agencies are all interested in spending as little money as possible. All of them send lawyers to the patient’s bedside with that goal in mind. The only person who doesn’t have legal protection is the patient himself.
