At least one man has been injured after an explosion at the Polyco Plant along I-45 in Ennis, Texas. The plant makes road construction materials, including asphalt, sealants, and coatings.

Firefighters arrived at the plant and put out the fire around 12:30 pm. News reports state that a man was pulled out of a tank and was rushed to an ambulance.

This is not the first incident at the plant. In February 2018, there was a fire, but no one was injured in that incident. An asphalt rail container blew up, causing a fire that was allowed to burn out by itself. Investigators will be looking closely at what caused this explosion, knowing that other incidents have happened in the past.

Road construction materials are inherently dangerous, and fires and explosions at asphalt plants are not uncommon. Employees have been injured by equipment and in explosions and fires at asphalt plants over the years. In the past two years, OSHA reports 20 serious incidents at asphalt plants.

Asphalt plant employers are responsible for providing guidelines for their employees, and must make sure that all employees are trained in safety measures and regulations. Explosions can be caused by design flaws, by poorly-maintained equipment, or by defects in equipment.
